Often, jewelry found at the sites of early civilizations yielded clues to the development of ancient cultures.Middle Eastern jewelry designs date from late antiquity and Byzantium. However, the designs evidence the diversity of its people.Traditional Yemenite designs as well as designs popular in the Caucasus, Iran and central Asia influenced much of the Middle Eastern jewelry.

Most probably the region's long history of commerce and trade explains the designs shared by its diverse people.

Traditionally, silver was the most important metal for jewelry. Silver gilt and gold jewelry were less common. Semi precious stones were used occasionally; among these were agate, turquoise and amber. Frequently, glass beads of the same colors were substituted for the stones.
