Craftsmen use local walnut wood in most furniture making. The wood is cut and seasoned for many years before use. After shaping the wood, craftsmen engrave it, then, they set the shells in the design and outline the finished design with tin to enhance its beauty.
The style of decoration mainly used for furniture today is based on the Ottoman tradition: a very simple all-over geometrical decoration is combined with ornate motifs featuring flowers and vases.
The furniture today is made by specialized craftsmen schooled in the ancient tradition of inlay. These craftsmen often use museum pieces as well as pieces displayed in catalogues from the Paris World Exhibition of 1897 as models for their creations.
