The earliest examples of inlay in the Orient were found in ancient Egypt. However, the industry in Syria dates from the Umayyad era (7th to the 8th centuries). Although very few examples remain from that era, many pieces from the 10th to the 14th centuries exist today. These pieces remain as the finest examples of the ancient craft.

When Orientalism was at its height in Europe at the end of  the 19th century, there was an increased demand for Syria’s skillfully decorated in-laid furniture.

This furniture, in-laid with mosaic-like designs of contrasting materials such as bone, ivory, mother of pearl and woods of various colors, was prized for its beauty. The designs were used on octagonal, round or star-shaped tables as well as chests of drawers, cupboards massive armchairs and frames for mirrors.
