The city of Sidon lies 43km south of Beirut, as you approach it, the first thing that strikes you is the ‘Castle of the Sea’, a 13th century crusader fortress which surveys the shore from an islet at the month of north harbor. The remains of the castle of Saint Louis stand to the south of ancient harbor, close to hill of Murex, from which the Phoenicians extracted their famous purple dye. Recent excavations underneath the Castle of St. Louis have unearthed the preserved remains of a Phoenician town. |
