Deir el Kamar was the residence of the Maan and Chehab; governors of Lebanon from the 16^th century to the 18^th century. The little capital is considered as the cradle of Lebanese unity. As evidence of its past status, Deir El Kamar square is surrounded by various buildings from the 17^th- 18^th century. In the beginning of the 19^th century, for security reason, Emir Beshir Shehab had to move the capital to Beiteddine, where he built a palace, which is a masterpiece of Oriental Architecture.
