Brocade is Syria’s luxury textile. Damascene brocade is made of natural pure silk with metal threads interwoven in intricate designs. Some brocades are made entirely from gold or silver threads. These threads usually have a cotton or linen core. Today, special threads which do not oxidize are used in the production of these beautiful fabrics. Among the impressive patterns used on brocades are the “Rose of Damascus”, the “Fighting Crusader” and “Paradise Lost”. A much admired pattern is “Queen Elizabeth” or “Love Birds”, a pattern designed upon Queen Elizabeth II's request on the occasion of her coronation.
