Archeologists
date the use of metal for decorative purposes to 2500 BC when
artisans in Egypt and Mesopotamia developed special techniques
for annealing and shaping metals.
Given as part of the bride's dowry, these beautiful ornaments
were considered the most important possession of all married
women. Women also received gifts of jewelry in return for their
contributions to the family income or business.
