Mosaic

Splendeurs d' Istanbul

Palais et Demeures du Bosphore

The art of mosaic-like inlay of contrasting materials such as bone, mother of pearl and woods of various colors set into wooden objects dates to the 9th century.

The earliest examples in the Orient were found in ancient Egypt. Today, highly prized are the inlaid boxes in a wide variety of styles and sizes and “Taula” (backgammon boards) found in the souqs of Egypt and Damascus. These wood crafts are valued for both their beauty and usefulness.
